Abstract

The Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI) has been a core partner for the implementation of a research project, the Seagrass Mapping and Carbon Assessment project, that aims at supporting the Government of Seychelles with spatial distribution of seagrass in Seychelles and their potential for carbon sequestration. The project was articulated with the Nationally Determined Contribution to the 2015 Paris Agreement to “protect 100% of seagrass and mangroves by 2030”. The presentation will address the innovative methodology employed for the mapping exercise at national scale, its alignment with international recommendations for Blue Carbon assessment, and highlight the potential for nature-based solutions to national greenhouse gases emissions and reach the net-zero target by 2050.
