Abstract

Four points were investigated in this communication

1.    What means Heritage ? a definition of UNESCO were chosen and explained

2.    Can the whole coral socio-ecological system act as heritage ? The assumption of IPBES about what is a socio-ecological system was presentend and discussed. A proof of concept was presented through an article dealing with the consequences of massive coral bleaching in Seychelles on 1998 and its consequences on fishing activity. It was showed that the coral reef social system is composed of users of the coral reef and this social system is an open system with strong relationships with the other component of the human society and economy.

3.    The vulnerability of the coral reef heritage. The concept of vulnerability was presented.  Several ways of representing vulnerability was identified and discussed

4.    Why should we reduce the vulnerability of coral reefs and how to do it?

To answer to this question a short chronology of the proofs of degradation of coral reef by human impacts were provided from beginning of the 1990 until now. The tentative of respond of scientists to these degradations were also discussed.
